Winter purslane came to Europe with the discovery of America and due to its saucer-shaped leaves has become known in German as 'saucer plant'.
Winter purslane provides an alternative to corn salad and is easily cultivated in a cold greenhouse. It can also overwinter in the open. It is harvested with a stem between 3 - 5cm long. It is cut 2cm above the soil so that the plant can regenerate and provide a further crop. This makes it more productive than corn salad.

Cultural tip:
Sowing should not begin before mid September otherwise winter purslane may start flowering and producing seeds in the autumn - the seeds may then appear as undesirable weeds among succeeding crops.
