The pea is one of oldest foods of central Europe. The earliest finds date back to 4500 BC. There are essentially three sub-species in cultivation today.
There are round seeded garden peas which can be either harvested before they are ripe as vegetables or ripened to dried peas.
Wrinkle seeded or marrow stem peas are consumed exclusively as vegetables in the immature state and are sweeter than garden peas.
With sugar peas the whole pods can be eaten since they don't form a tough inner layer of parchment.
Peas are supplied with nitrogen from the air by the nodule forming bacteria in their roots.

Cultural tip:
An early sowing generally leads to a higher yield.
