Because of the white egg-shaped form of its wild relative, the aubergine is also known as egg plant. It has been grown in India for over 2000 years. Its cultivation spread to southern Europe during the 17th century and with 1.8 million hectares under cultivation across the world today, it has become one of the most important vegetable species. Due to the amount of warmth they require, aubergines are almost exclusively grown under glass in Germany and only in very favourable areas is outdoor cultivation possible.
Kultursaat e.V. is able to offer a tasty and flavoursome variety called Zora that originates from the Piluweri biodynamic market garden near Freiburg.

Cultural tip:
- Avoid planting close to peppers or cucumbers in order to prevent the transfer of aphids and spider mites.
- Aubergines should not be harvested when they are too unripe otherwise they won't keep.
- The temperature of the cold store should not drop below 10 °C if damage from cold is to be avoided.
